Benefits Of Rainwater Collection

Water is the most important natural resource available to us. Water is life and at the same time, it is scarce too. Most people take water for granted in India. We waste water and do not use it responsibly. We just open the faucet and its always there. Around 70% of the globe is covered in the water out of which only 1% of water is drinkable. This states that we need to start acting on water conservation and use it more economically to save this precious resource. If we do not stop wasting water and we are afraid that in the coming years, the water demand will outstrip the supply. We are already standing at the break-even point of water supply and demand.

There are many different ways to conserve water and rainwater collection is one of them. The monsoon has knocked on the door and this is the best time of rainwater collection. We will give you enough reasons to collect rainwater.

Low water bills

By using collected rainwater, you can decrease the tapwater usage and replace it with a  completely free resource for many different uses such as washing the car, watering the pavements, etc. it will save your money and reduce demand on the municipal water supply. It is most beneficial for irrigation, farms, and industrial complexes as they can create significant savings and ease the burden during water shortages by collecting rainwater.

Reduced groundwater contamination

Stormwater runoff is a significant source of groundwater pollution. Industrial waste, used oil, harmful chemicals, pesticides, and bacteria are washed directly into lakes, rivers, and other water supplies. Rainwater collection reduces the amount of runoff and reroutes to the designated plastic water storage tanks for reuse. Ultimately, the number of untreated pollutants decrease reducing the groundwater contamination.

Decreased Risk of Flood and Soil erosion

It is assumed that rainwater can reach speeds up to 20 miles per hour and throw soil up to five feet across and two feet high. One rainstorm can wash away approximately one-half inch of dirt. If rainwater is captured before it reaches the ground will reduce flooding and help to control erosion caused by runoff.

Low Maintenance Cost

The cost of maintaining rainwater catchment is minimal. Regular cleaning and periodic inspections ensure that there are no leaks and water are ready to be used for washing the cars, watering the garden, flushing toilets, washing clothes, etc.
Remember that rainwater is not ideal for drinking. Implement some sort of purification system before using it for drinking or personal hygiene.

6 Ways To Prevent Algae Growth In Water Tank

‘Water is life’. To save the life, Keeping it clean and safe became necessary. Water storage is getting more important daily. A best quality plastic water tank can assure us of safe water and prevent harmful bacteria, algae, and fungus.
Higher chance of algae growth can be noticed, when a water tank comes into contact with sunlight and moisture. Algae is a harmful bacteria, carries pernicious toxins and affect the human bodies, as well as animals and plants.

There are solutions to prevent algae growth. Follow these simple methods and make sure your water tank is free from algae.

1. Clean With Bleach: Pour 1-3 teaspoon (for 500 liter) of bleach in the water and close the lid for the 10 minutes. Bleach will kill the algae very quickly and prevent it from further growth.

2. Clean With Chlorine: Take 1-2 teaspoon of chlorine for 500-litre water tank. Close the lid and Wait for 12 hours. The next day you will see the difference. Drain out all the chlorine water. You need to be careful while pouring bleach and chlorine in the water. Do not pour both chlorine and bleach for a double cleansing effect. Else, It can create a harmful effect.

3. Try to buy a poly storage plastic water tank made from food-grade polyethene, which is the best quality tank.

4. Smooth-walled tanks are better than undulating tanks to prevent algae growth. However, you have to maintain a proper cleaning process two times a year.

5. A proper strainer and pipework are crucial to prevent algae growth. As they impede most of the sunlight getting in the tank.

6. Algae needs both heat and light to grow. Place your tank in a shaded area so that it can not get direct light and heat to grow.

For cleaning the tank, we recommend you to ask the professionals. Adding too much of the certain chemical or wrong products can be dangerous. It is safe not to do this by yourself. To get all the facility always choose the best quality plastic tank.

Multi-Barrier Approach- Five Steps to Clean Water

Today is World Water Day. Water safety is one of the biggest concerns around the globe. It is our responsibility to protect water quality from its source to consumption. According to the World Health Organisation, the best way to treat the water is by following household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS). This multi-barrier approach ensures water protection at every step from the water source to household storage and consumption.

Step 1: Water Source Protection

Unfortunately, water gets polluted at its source or point of collection through poor site selection, poor construction, deterioration or lack of hygiene or poor sanitation. This issue can be addressed by the following:
  • Regular cleaning of the area around the water source
  • Moving toilets away from and downstream of water sources
  • Building fences around open water sources
  • Lining wells and
  • Building proper drainage for wastewater around taps and wells.

Step 2: Sedimentation

Turbid water looks cloudy, dirty or muddy that is caused by sand, silt or clay.  It has more pathogens that are not recommended for drinking as it can make us fall sick. Sedimentation is a physical water treatment process that reduces the turbidity of water. This process can be quickened by adding special chemicals or native plants popularly known as coagulants to the water. The most common chemicals include aluminum sulfate, polyaluminum chloride, and ferric sulfate.

Step 3: Filtration

The next method is filtration to further reduce turbidity and remove pathogens. It is a physical process that involves passing water through filter media. The most common filters used by households include cloth, sand, ceramic pot, ceramic candle, sawyer, and Kanchan arsenic.

Step 4: Disinfection

The next step is disinfecting the water by one or more of the following ways: chlorine disinfection, solar, and boiling. This step is essential to kill any remaining pathogens.

Step 5: Safe Water Storage

After disinfecting the water, it is important to store it safely so that it does not get recontaminated. If it is not done so, the treated water quality may become worse than the source water and can be harmful. We use water storage tanks to store water to meet the daily water needs. Therefore, invest in a good quality plastic water storage tank from Penguin Tank for the safe storage of water. These tanks serve the purpose for both domestic and commercial water storage tank in India.

On this World Water Day, ensure that the water that you are using is safe and healthy. Treat water well to lead a healthy life.

Is BPA Free Plastic Water Storage Tank Safe To store water?

BPA stands for bisphenol A. It is a chemical that is added to make certain plastics including food containers, water bottles, and many other items. BPA is considered harmful for human consumption. It is believed that plastic that contains BPA may lead to a number of health issues such as infertility in men and women, heart diseases, type 2 Diabetes, PCOS, premature delivery, asthma, liver function, immune function, brain function, and thyroid function. However, it has not been officially confirmed but the research is on. Here, arises the need for BPA free plastic. BPA free plastic material is generally considered safe and is manufactured using food grade material.

Water storage tanks are widely used to store water in domestic and commercial properties all over the world. In fact, it is a necessity as having a water tank ensures the uninterrupted supply of water through day and night. Water is a basic necessity of life. Without water, we cannot spend even a single day. Water has many uses apart from drinking. It is needed to do all household chores such as cooking, washing clothes, and utensils, cleaning and bathing, gardening, irrigation, washing pets and animals, manufacturing, swimming, recreation, hydropower generation and so on. To meet all of the above, water storage is essential.

Water storage tanks come in a range of variables such as plastic, steel, fibreglass, and concrete. Here, we are focussing on the safety of plastic water storage tanks. Of late, plastic water storage tanks have replaced the other varieties in many parts of India. Today, plastic water tank manufacturers are manufacturing their water tanks using the BPA free polyethene plastic material. Penguin Tank is one such plastic water tank manufacturer in West Bengal. Can Salt Water Be Converted Into Drinking Water?

Out of all the natural resources on Earth, water is the scarcest. Water is not only scarce but also precious. Without water, life is impossible on Earth. It is needed on a daily basis to survive on our planet for all living beings. Do you know that 98% of water is oceanic salt water, 1.5% remains locked up in icecaps and glaciers and the remaining 0.5% is the only water available for drinking and other uses. What if we convert those salty water into drinking water? Is it really possible? Let us find out.

Actually, it is possible. The process is popularly known as desalination. We can do and people are doing it since ancient times of the Greeks. But doing it on a large scale has been found very expensive in comparison to the local sources of fresh water. With the continuous advancement in technology, the research is on to drive down the costs so that maximum people can make use of it keeping in mind the growing scarcity of fresh water.

Let us get to know what exactly is desalination of water and how is it done? It is a process of removing salt from saltwater and it can be done in different ways. However, the most common ones include distillation and reverse osmosis method. The major countries following this method include Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. Desalination provides 70% of drinking water in Saudi Arabia. While in the United States, the largest users through of water through this process include Virginia, Florida, Texas, and California. Since decades, cruises ships, submarines, and ships have been using this water. Desalination is going to be set up in India soon and according to reports, the state of Tamil Nadu is all set to introduce India’s first offshore desalination unit. Let's hope for the best and we really look forward to this.

In fact, the other regions of India having sea beaches should also look into it seriously as the water is not free anymore and is becoming expensive day by day. There are many rural areas in India who suffer acute water shortages throughout the year and there are many drought-affected areas too that needs a consistent water supply for agricultural and irrigation purposes. Penguin Tank strongly recommends doing so to meet an uninterrupted supply of water demand, just like, their plastic water storage tank does.

Is The Color Black An Ideal Choice For A Commercial Water Storage Tank?

Commercial water storage tanks are one of the most commonly used tanks in everyday life. This is due to the fact that many people have discovered the benefits of the fresh and safe water supply of their own. Safe storage of water is not only essential for residential buildings but also for commercial ones. To ensure the safety, water tanks need to be installed. Many people prefer black colored water tanks than white ones for many reasons. Have you ever wondered why so? Let us find out.

Safe Storage: Safety of water is the main concern at the time of its storage. Most diseases are water borne and occur mainly due to bacteria, microbes, and algae present in it. All aboveground water storage tanks when comes in direct contact with sunlight gives growth to algae. Algae is harmful for human consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to block the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun to enter the water tank. Since black is a good conductor of heat, it blocks out the maximum light from the interior of the tank.

Saves Energy: Commercial water storage tanks can be used for both drinking as well as other purposes such as bathing or washing. Black colored water storage tanks are continuously exposed to sunlight and therefore provide warm and not hot water that can be used extensively. This way it reduces energy consumption and costs. Therefore, it is an ideal implementation of conserving energy and saving our planet.

Helps in Long-term Plastic Degradation: Plastic material even if UV stabilized, might suffer long-term degradation as it is continuously exposed to sunlight. Black color keeps a control on this and lowers the chance of long-term degradation.

Off-gassing: Plastic, when used continuously, may impart its smell into the water. As plastic ages, it may show some off-gassing effects but this is not the case with black colored tanks it would clearly outperform white ones here.

Therefore, people prefer using black colored water storage tanks. Black is considered as the original color of water storage tanks as it makes it less porous, stronger and beneficial for a long-term usage. Although there are many attractive colors now available in plastic water storage tanks. But black remains the most traditional one. When you cannot decide the color, simply go with black keeping in mind the advantages mentioned above. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
