Water is a hot commodity. It's time to do a water usage audit of your home.

You use ample amount of water every day in your household, but have you ever done an audit of the same. It is important because doing so you can save upto 40% of the water every year. You will be amazed by the result and realize how much water you waste unintentionally every day. The main areas of water usage include the kitchen, the laundry, the bathroom, and the outdoors. Here are some simple tips to save water in each of them individually.

The Kitchen: The kitchen use up to 10% of water for cooking, drinking and washing up. A dishwasher can use upto 10 to 12 liters of water. Fill your sink with water(twice or thrice) and rinse dishes instead under running water. Replace the washer of dripping taps whenever there is a leakage.

The Laundry: The laundry is again a bigger water consumer, around 15 to 20% of water is being used for washing clothes. We mainly use washing machines for washing clothes. Prefer a front load washing machine over a top loading machine as the former saves water as well as energy. Switch on the machine when it is fully loaded only to save upto 10 liters per wash.

The Bathroom: Use water efficient shower heads to save water while taking a shower. For a bath, fill the bucket with the required water only and do not throw away excess water. While brushing teeth or shaving, close tap water when not in use. While waiting for the water to run hot, place a bucket under the tap to collect water and use it for gardening or washing the car. Use a good quality flush as it uses about 6 liters of water every time you flush. Check for leaks regularly and fix it immediately.

The Outdoors: Use a pool cover or blanket to minimize evaporation. An uncovered pool uses around 6766 liters of water to evaporation every year. It takes about 300 liters of water to wash the car. Use a bucket to wash the car and do not let run the water unnecessarily. Prefer water-wise plants and lawns for the garden and make use of irrigation drippers and native plants to save water.

This water audit will help you to recognize the key wastage areas of your home. Also, consider installing a good quality water storage tank such as Penguin Tank to save water and energy.

How to keep mosquitoes away from the water storage tanks?

Water storage tanks are not just a home accessory but home essentials. They allow households and business establishments to thrive all year for different purposes. Therefore, it becomes important to protect the tanks from the insects and other microorganisms. The most common among these are mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are a nasty insect which carries deadly illnesses. Mosquito-borne diseases carry symptoms such as fever, tiredness, rash and joint swelling. They love to lay eggs in standing water. Water storage tanks are a natural choice for them. Therefore keep your tank mosquito proof for your safety. Let us see how can you protect your tank from becoming a mosquito spawning pool.
  • Watch out before installation and make sure that they do not get an environment in which they can thrive. Think about each point that mosquitoes could access and take measures to seal all of them to prevent their access.
  • Protect inlets and overflows. Set up mosquito proof strainers and screens on overflows, outlets, and inlets. Use screens that do not corrode away easily. Make sure that screens and strainer are tightly fitted and do not have defects, holes, and rips. Get them repaired immediately if a damage is seen to any of them. Use flap valves as these can prevent mosquitoes from going through openings when shut.
  • Clean the water tank four times a year. Inspect the whole tank regularly and check on any corrosion or gaps because of wear and tear over time. Also, check the joints where the lid meets the body of the tank as this could wrap and develop a gap for mosquitoes to gain entry. If found so, hire a qualified contractor to get it fixed.
  • Do not ignore the area around the tank. Make sure that the areas around are clean and does not have holes or digs to deposit water. The mosquitoes will then lay eggs in the water spreading the infection to the tank as well. Gutters and another area needs to be kept clear of any stagnant water. Fallen Leaves and accumulated debris can cause a water backlog.

Still water even a very small amount can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. If you find the larvae of mosquitoes wriggling on the surface of the water, get it cleaned and then locate and fix the mosquitoes points of entry. Follow these steps to keep mosquitoes away from your plastic water storage tank. Safety lies in your own hands.

Let us Review the Different Stages of Rotational Molding Process in Detail

Rotational moulding or rotomolding is a process of manufacturing seamless hollow plastic products. Products manufactured using this process are extremely strong, long-lasting and durable and can be moulded in desired size and shape. Rotational moulding was first developed in the 20th century and it was in the early 1960s when it gained wide acceptance. Plastic water storage tanks are manufactured using the rotomolding process which makes it the ideal choice. Rotomolding process is divided into four stages. Let's review the stages in detail.

Stage One: Loading the mould with polyethylene resin

At this stage, the mold is being opened and polyethylene resin is loaded into the mold. The pulverized material, a fine powder form is loaded into the prepared mold. After doing so, the mold is closed properly and rotated outside to ensure no powder is able to escape.

Stage Two: The mold enters the cook cycle while rotating on two axes at a low speed

As the mold is closed and secured, it moves into the heating chamber of the oven while rotating on two axes at a low speed. This is popularly known as the oven’s cook cycle and a standard temperature is maintained within the cook cycle in order to avoid overcooked and undercooked products.

Stage Three: Precooling and cooling of the mold while still rotating

The mold then moves into the cooling chamber and is cooled by air or a water spray or a combination of both while still rotating after a predetermined duration of the pre-cool cycle. This is an integral step to any rotationally molded products.

Stage Four: The final product is removed by unloading the molded product

After the cooling cycle is successfully completed, the mold is taken out of the cooling chamber where it is manually opened. The molded product is then removed from the same at an optimum temperature. The final product is ready to be displayed.

There are a number of materials available for rotational moulding and the most widely used is polyethylene. Plastic water storage tanks have become the top priority of the consumers at present all over the world. The manufacturing method of plastic water storage tanks is an integral part of this process. Penguin Tank is one such name who is manufacturing rotomolding water tanks for both domestic and commercial uses.
