Tips To Keep Your Water Storage Tank Algae-Free

Water is such a thing that human beings cannot live without. Hence, storing drinking water safely in a water storage tank is equally important, and therefore the cleanliness should not be neglected. If you have installed a plastic water storage tank for domestic or commercial purposes, you must pay enough attention to its cleanliness. Because, if a water tank is kept ignored or neglected, the growth of algae can be seen inside the tank itself. Hence, here, in this blog, we are going to give you some pro tips by following which you can easily control the growth of algae inside your water tank.

Go for chemical treatment-

You can combat the growth of algae by opting for chemical treatments for your water tank. The proper amount of bleach or chlorine can abolish the formation of algae from its root. But, the proportion of water and chemical should be in the right amount, or else, the water will not be safe for drinking.

Paint the tank-

Opaque or non-transparent water tanks are able to block the sunlight. And, if the sunlight itself cannot enter the tank, how can the growth of algae be possible? Hence, choose dark-colored water tanks or paint your water tank with some dark colors like jet black, or dark blue, etc. Dark colors indeed help to prevent the formation of algae inside the water tanks.

A regular maintenance of the water tank-

You must be up-to-date about the current situation of your plastic water storage tank. A regular checkup or maintenance can notify you exactly when your water storage tank requires a clean-up and accordingly you can start the cleaning process before the situation of the tank gets worst and out of your hands. Hence, do keep your eyes on your domestic or commercial water storage tank and prevent the growth of algae inside it. Just do a quick test for checking these aspects:

Witness the position of the tank in the sun.

Open up the lid of the water tank just to see whether the sunlight is entering or not.

Apart from these, you must select a premium quality water storage tank for you. Note that your water tank must be manufactured with high-quality food-grade plastic material so that it can keep the water fresh, pure, and drinkable for a longer period of time.

Fact- In reality, water does not really expire. It can taste stale if stored for a longer period of time. But it is necessarily not addressed to be expired. The stale taste of stored water can be easily removed if the water goes through purification. But, until or unless the water gets in touch with contaminants, it does not get polluted while being stored inside storage.

Myth-5:

One does not necessarily need to stock up water if he/she has access to a pond, river, or well.

Steel tanks- Because of the screws and other connecting parts of a steel tank, the water often gets polluted. Rusting is common in steel tanks. Heavy rusting hampers the quality of the potable water.

Polywater tanks- As polywater tanks nowadays are made of food-grade plastic materials, they are totally rustproof. Hence, the water inside the plastic water storage tanks remains pure and fresh for a longer period of time.

    • Size:

Steel tanks- Steel tanks are bigger in size if we compare them with plastic tanks. The capacity of steel tanks is abundant.

Polywater tanks- Plastic tanks are not that much big like steel tanks.

    • Style:

Steel tanks- There is less variety in steel tanks.

Polywater tanks- Polywater tanks are versatile in shape, color, and style. There are so many colors available for a polywater tank. You may choose according to your wish.

    • Price:

Steel tanks- Stainless steel tanks are comparatively expensive because of their huge size, and material.

Polywater tanks- Plastic tanks are affordable and cheap enough.

Here are 5 common myths about water storage that you should know before storing water in a plastic water storage tank –

    • Water can expire – Water does not have an expiry date but it can become contaminated. However, water can get a stale taste but this can be eliminated by purifying the water. Try to store water in an ideal condition. Keep it in a dry and cool place. Do not allow direct sunlight to reach your domestic water storage tank. If you can store water like this, then it can remain in good condition for a long time. Make sure to rotate the water after certain intervals in order to reduce the risk of contamination.

    • Water can be stored in plastic containers - It is absolutely safe to store water in plastic containers but it should be UV-resistant. Water storage barrels are mostly blue in color. This is because the blue color limits light exposure and eliminate the growth of algae and bacteria within the plastic water storage tank. Tanks made up of polythene are the safest containers to store water. Buy tanks from renowned water tank manufacturers in India as you should never compromise the quality when it is about water.

    • Water barrel can help you in emergencies – You can store water in a tank for later use and emergency purposes as well. However, if you want to travel from one location to another then you cannot carry a water barrel with you. Also, it is problematic if you have only one barrel of water. If there is any problem with the barrel then you might run out of water until and unless the problem is getting fixed. You should store water in various containers for emergencies.

    • We only need water purifiers  – Water purifiers can kill 99.9% of microorganisms like protozoa, viruses, and bacteria, found in water. Chlorine dioxide is great for treating your water kept in barrels as well as for water collected from streams and ponds. However, it is to be noted that a water purifier cannot remove turbidity from the water. So it is recommended to use both a water purifier and a water filter as well.

    • Water barrels can be stuck on top of each other – It is not recommended to stack water barrels on top of each other. However, if you want to save your floor space by stacking water barrels, you should use containers with grooves on the bottom for stacking. However, you should not keep your water barrel directly on cement or on your garage floor. Plastic can absorb flavors and chemicals in course of time and this can make the taste of water unbearable to drink. Try to place your barrel on a wooden board.

    2. After the powder is ready, you can insert it in the mould by following the right amount. The machine of rotational moulding is heated around 300-degree Celsius. To form a uniform layer of plastic, the mould is then rotated in a certain low speed.

    3. Once the heat is generated, the plastic starts to surround in the mould and it gradually agglutinates the mould. With this step, the mould forms a monolithic layer against the mould surface.

    4. The mould rotation continues until the plastic coagulates and then it reaches the cooling process. Once the cooling process is done the plastic forms into a solid form. The mould rotation is then stopped and the plastic water storage tank is carefully removed from the mould.

A domestic water storage tank is one of the most essential things to buy and install in a home. If you want to use it for all kinds of household chores, you need to make sure that it is capable enough to supply water to the whole house. But after buying comes the installation process. If you have chosen a plastic water storage tank for your home, you should also know that it is quite easy to install. If you want, you can even install it yourself. That’s why we have given a very simple three-step installation process for you to follow. Take a look.

The base of the tank should be prepared

First and foremost, you will need to make a base for the tank where you will be able to put it. A base of the tank can be of two types. One is a concrete base and the other one is compacted material base.

If you want to make a concrete base, you will first need a three-inch reinforced concrete slab that has been levelled properly. The diameter or the dimension of the base should be bigger than the size of your tank. Ensure that the base is sturdy enough to hold the tank properly for a long time.

On the other hand, if you want to go with the second option, you will need to create a three-inch pad of compacted road base. This base should be 24 inches larger than the diameter of the water tank. Make sure that there are no rocks or stones or anything sharp that would damage the tank. Make it thoroughly compacted and the outside of the base should be supported so that erosion does not occur.

The overflow drainage pipe should be fitted

If you purchased your domestic water storage tank from a well-known company, then your fitting may already be installed unless otherwise specified. Your piping is going to supply the water to the whole home, so there should not be any mistake. Your drainage system will be needed to fit the piping properly. So, fit them where the water drained out will not undermine the base.

The fill pipes should be installed from the roof

Next thing you should do is to fit your pipe that goes from your tank lid to your roof. If you are using the water in your tank for drinking also then you need to speak to the professional to make sure your water for drinking is filtered properly. You must make sure that the filter basket is in its required place in the lid of your water tank.

These three steps are the only thing that you need to make sure is followed meticulously without any mistake. And then your domestic water storage tank will ready for use.
